Place Beyond The Pines

The first establishing shot of the fairground shows the bleakness of it. This is because we can hear the no diegetic sounds of the screams and laughs however we’re seeing the back part of it with the gravel road. Before we see the conversation we can hear it in this shot, I think that this shows what he’s walking away from and that the mountains in the distance could show the new better world he could leave an disappear into. However I think the mountains could maybe show how he’s surrounded by the thick dense forest and that the is nowhere out. The side close up shot of Luke’s boss is hand held, this could show his anger towards Luke as he’s quitting and walking away from him but also show his fear and what it will be like without him. The mise-en-scene in the background of the is shot of the curling up poster could represent Luke’s departure as he is trying to hold on to him but the longer he stays the worse it will get. For the close up shot of Luke it is also handled, this contrasts with his certain to leave but could also show his torn apart nature of what he is doing. In addition the mise-en-scene aspect of the cigarette in his mouth could show how much he doesn’t care about what he is doing, he isn’t worried about the impact. In the first close-up of his boss the is no window behind him which could show that he is trapped however the is a window behind Luke showing that he does have a way out and the is hope for him. Alongside that I think that the mise-en-scene of the cigarette hanging out of his mouth could suggest how little he cares about the situation and that he also wants to get away; most people smoke to escape so this could foreshadow him wanting to escape for this world. The music also sounds like a hymn of something you would here in a church, this could show his relationship with God and that he is trying to better himself, it could also link to the Holy Bible tattoo he has on his hand.

The long shot of Luke pulling up on his motorbike could show that even though he’s left that old life behind he is still got the same bike and the same clothes, the background may have changed but he’s still the same. The behind the shoulder shot of Luke knocking on the door could maybe show his gentler side because he only uses two fingers so the performance could suggest that he isn’t as hard as his appearance makes him look. In addition to that the clothing aspect of the mise-en-scene of his shirt being inside out could show he’s trying to turn his life around. It could also suggest is finical situation that maybe he has to wear the same shirt twice to turns it inside out.  After that the close up shot of Luke looking down could show the performance that he’s trying to prepare himself and that he’s scared. In addition the camera follows his movements which I think could suggest that he can’t find his fear. The two shot of Luke and Romina I think shows the separation between the two characters because the match on action editing makes you never see both of their faces. Romina also is wearing a blue top, the clothing aspect of the mise-en-scene could show that he feels lonely. In the framing of the next close up shot of Luke the is a pole in the middle f the shot. I think that this could also show his separation from this world because they are block flats behind him showing his poverty but the is nature on the other side showing the better life he is held back from. The close medium shot just as the door opens is extremely shaky, this handheld shot could show how nervous Luke is to realize she’s with someone else and maybe how unexpected it is for him. The mid close up of Kofi is at a slightly high angle showing his dominance over Luke. He’s also holding the baby which could show how he is now part of this family unit and him bring her out is almost rubbing it in their faces. The close up shot of Luke as we can still here the dietetic sound of  Romina and Kofi still taking but we can’t hear them reacting could show how Luke’s almost an observer of this new life with Romina and Kofi but he can’t get involved. The shot also gets shakier as they all walk past him, I think that this could show Luke’s emotion on the inside and how he feels quite dismayed about the situation. The mid shot of Kofi leaving and locking the door could also show his dominance over the whole family as he is the last one to leave. The camera then moves to Luke lighting a cigarette again show that he doesn’t care about this conversation with Kofi and that he doesn’t like him. I think that is could also show that smoking damages your inside and this situation is damaging Luke. Also he isn’t even really smoking it’s just having it lit in his mouth. This could show that he needs it there for comfort. The long shot of the family getting in the car could show Luke’s distance between the characters with the eye line editing. The mise en scene of the red ca could also represent the Luke’s anger with what he is seeing. The diegetic sound of the baby crying could also represents Luke’s feelings of being so upset, it could also show that they should be together and it creates more tension. The long shot of Luke standing on the porch could show how alone he is because the is so much distance in the shot but it’s just him. Also the framing again as a pole in the middle with small flowers on one side and him on the over, this could show the delicacy of the rest of the world but he’s not a part of it. On top of the clothing aspect of the mise en scene he is dressed in all white showing how he is trying to be pure again, he is also standing in front of the door meaning he could still leave.
